How competitive is it to get into a doctoral program? I will be completing my Masters of Education (English Language) in April 2008 and I'm really keen to get into the IOE( Institute of Education, University of London) for the October 2008 intake. I wonder how many people apply and how I can improve my chances of getting in. I love research. Getting into the doctoral program is all that I ever want for the next three years.
How difficult is it to get accepted into a doctoral program? I will be finished with my Master's in May (English Literature) and would like to continue my studies and pursue a Doctoral degree. My G.P.A. is average (3.55) but I suck at standardize testing (G.R.E. in particular) I would like to attend USC or the University of Georgia So my question is how hard is it to get accepted into a doctoral program and what should I do to increase my odds at getting accepted? thanks so much!
What is the format of a succinct statement for the doctoral program? Hello I spent weeks writing and editing my succinct statement I am writing for admission into a doctoral program. What is the format? Do the paragraphs need to be indented double spaced, or do the paragraphs stay flush left with a double space between paragraphs? This is a statement of my personal objectives and how they will be furthered by graduate study. Please answer only if you have experience! Thank you
Is this true about what the students receive in a doctoral program? I was researching some information on a doctoral program since a friend I knew went into one last year, and was wondering if anyone else can corroborate what I found: - the tuition is waived for the student during their entire term - the student receives compensation while working as a research assistant or T.A. - the student receives free room and board at a dorm - the student receives an annual stipend to help pay for other costs - the student has to maintain a certain GPA in order to keep said benefits - one drawback being that the student sacrifices several years of good income while attending the program. Wow, free tuition and free roam and board while getting a great degree, what more can a student ask for. (And here I was worried that my friend might be stretched money-wise while going to school, like so many other current MBA students that I know). Can anyone corroborate this info? Why does the doctoral program do this and not an MBA program?
What graduate/doctoral program should I study? I am interested in a psychology career. I thought I wanted to do counseling until I discovered psychometrics. Now I am confused as to which program I should pursue for graduate and doctoral studies. I cannot do both because of time/financial constraints. Both have positive and negative sides. What factors would you consider in making such a decision? Thanks.
How does getting a master's degree in a doctoral program work? "Many colleges and universities offer bachelor's degree programs in marine biology. Can you get into a doctoral program without a masters? I am an undergraduate who is applying for doctoral programs in the social sciences. All the college websites state I can apply, however won't I have very little chance to get in because most of the other applicants with have a Masters and more life/research experiences? Just looking for a straight answer!
Chances getting into a Doctoral Program? I'm about to end my Junior year and I have started looking at some schools i want to apply for Graduate school. I know my grades aren't great and I was wondering what are my chances of getting into a Doctoral program (Clinical Psych perhaps). I'm getting my BA in Psych and I have cumulative 2.9 GPA, I did a student-group research project and have not taken my GRE's yet (but studying). Is there anything that I can do to improve my chances?
Are departments biast and just choose people they want in the doctoral program without an interview? I am applying for my doctoral degree. I had to go through an interviewing process in front of a committee. However, I feel that no matter how well I presented myself, one person looked at the walls, and the other person kept staring at his watch. The next day, I asked 2 other doctoral applicants if they got into the doctoral program. Both were never interviewed but said they just got in there because they knew people in the department. I do not think that this is fair to let some candidates in without the formal process. Is it true that the applicant screening is about favoritisim? Please let me know your experiences if you got rejected or not.
Would a clinical psychology doctoral program look at your masters in social work GPA? I'm stressing myself beyond belief to maintain a 4.0 GPA in my masters program. I'm being told I don't need to worry that much, but I think I do. Clinical Psychology PhD programs are extremely selective. I'm sure they look at other factors like experience, organizations with which you're involved, admissions essays, and your interest in research, but is it necessary to maintain a 4.0 GPA?
How difficult is it to get into a doctoral program without a Master's degree? I have a bachelor's degree in accounting and am a licensed CPA with a few years of experience in the field. I'd like to pursue a PhD in business (at a top school) and don't want to get a Master's if it's not really necessary. If an admissions officer came across my application and everything was strong, but I had no Master's, what would be my chances of getting into the program? If you work for a university please include the name, thanks!
What degrees and experiences help with admission to a Education Doctoral Program? I have two degrees in the Performing Arts, both with excellent grades and I have some job experience. I have not taken many education courses, although I have had some courses that deal with education in the performing arts. I have suddenly realized that I am very interested in studying education, not to become a teacher in the future, but just the field of education and methods of education, (education from a psychological perspective). Do I have a chance to be admitted to a program that offers a Ph.D. in Education?
How long does it take to hear if I'll be invited to interview for a doctoral program? Obviously, I want to know if I'll be accepted as a PhD student in the program. The first step was applying by December 1, which I did. The next step would be to be invited to an interview by the school. Interviews start in late January. When should I anticipate hearing from the school on whether I'll be invited for the interview? Also, will they email or send a letter by snail mail?
Private University Doctoral Program Acceptance Rate? I hear that getting into doctoral programs is a lot easier at private universities than public. At my current university, there is about a 94% rejection rate for all psychology doctoral programs. What would be for a place like Capella University or Argosy University?

How long is a typical doctoral degree program in psychology? I understand experience is the sought after part as well as education. I considered just getting my masters, but I understand the state may require more, and I would be under the supervision of a higher degree. Technically that's fine I guess until I decide if I want to become more fully involved. I don't see me taking on the more severe disorders until I have enough experience, and education; I consider something like this to be serious as it is important, so confidence is key. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

What is a doctoral program? I am majoring in accounting and am looking into MBA/CPA but I came across doctoral programs for certain graduate schools (such as Wharton and Carnegie Mellon, etc.). Do these doctoral programs involve 4 years of graduate school or just 2 years? Is it to get a Ph. D or MBA and a Ph. D? It just confused me a bit because of the whole doctoral program being under these Schools of Businesses... I am interested, please help!

Are there doctoral programs that accept law school credits? I attended law school for just one year. I also have a M.A. in History. I have been looking for a doctoral program that will accept both my M.A. credits and my credits from law school, but I have not been able to find one. Does anyone know if any such programs exists?
Currently in a Masters program, want to stop courses and apply to doctoral program or another masters program.? I am currently in a masters psychology program. My ultimate goal is to get a PhD/PsyD in clinical psychology. I currently don't like the masters program I am in and want to terminate early. It is overpriced and focuses too much on cultural issues instead of psychopathology and mental disorders. Have other people done this? Is this ok? My ultimate goal is a doctoral degree anyways, so I would think it wouldn't do harm. Does this reflect bad on me or is it merely be seen as wanting to go to a new program? Thanks ahead for help! Oh Sorry. I guess I wasn't specific enough. The program is two years long and I was going to continue until the end of the school year, and by then I would know if I got into another program. Sorry for the confusion!
Neuropsychology Doctoral Program? I'm currently an undergraduate sophomore studying psychology and biology. I'm thinking of doctorate in neuropsychology. How many years does it take to complete the graduate program? What are colleges looking for in applicants? What tests do I need to take? And what are some good schools for neuropsychology?
Finding a Doctoral Program? I am interested in getting a PhD/EdD in Educational Studies but I am having trouble finding schools that offer (either online or regular classes) it. Does anybody know of any colleges that offer this program besides the University of Cincinnati?
Is there a doctoral program in education/school counseling that I can afford? I have a B.A. in Psychology, a M.S.Ed in special education, and 30 additional credits including NJ state certification as a school counselor, and courses in literacy. I am 54 with 32 years in public education and a child in college and am looking to earn a doctorate in education or school counseling but I have very limited funding. Most doctoral programs, in class and online, seem to accept only about 3 courses and then charge about 10-15K for the remaining coursework. On top of my son's college costs, this is impossible. I am looking for a university that would accept all 30 of my post-masters credits toward a doctorate and/or would exchange me teaching classes for tuition credit toward my doctorate. I also wonder if I can get any credit for my work experience. I am in the southern NJ area. Is there a way I can apply all I have already accomplished to abbreviate the time and reduce the cost of earning a doctorate?
How long is the average PhD program with a "non-masters" pre-requisite? I am looking at a doctoral program in nutrition. My goal is to work in research. I have worked in healthcare as a certified and liscenced occupational therapist with a hand therapy certification and I am looking to make a career change. My undergraduate degree is in Occupational Therapy from a state medical school.
94% Psychology Doctoral Program Rejection Rate? Of course trying to get into a PhD program in clinical psychology is damn near impossible but at my current university, the rejection rate for all PhD's in psychology is about 90%. This is just a crappy state school too. Is that the rejection rate i should expect at every university or are some easier to get into than that? What i mean by rejection rate is that 94% of the people who apply to get into some kind of psychology doctoral program at my current university are rejected.
What do you think of the National Guard College First program? How long do you have to sign up for? What are your commitments during those two years? And after those two years? Would this be a good option for someone entering a 5 year, intense (and expensive) doctoral program with no money? Thanks in advance, -Kevin
What amount of research experience is needed to be considered for a PhD program in Clinical Psychology? I will be getting my Master's in August 2008, and am now looking around at doctoral programs. I'm kind of worried because I don't have much research experience. Aside from a small research project in my undergrad years (hardly anything even worth mentioning) and the thesis that I just started, I won't really be bringing much to the table in terms of experience. My advisor simply said "get some research experience." With a full load and a thesis in the works, I'm not really sure how to do that before graduation! Will a completed thesis be enough to be considered (and hopefully accepted) into a PhD (or possible PsyD) program? I appreciate your help!
Do you need to get a masters degree before you can get a doctoral degree? I was looking at information for a forensic psychology degree for a college. It said you can apply for both doctoral program and the masters program at the same time. Doctoral you get a PhD, the masters you get a MA. i'm not sure if i need to get a masters first or if i can choose to get a PhD and skip the MA. Does anyone know?
should i go for a pscyh doctoral program this year in L.A. or wait a year and go to San Diego? the programs are the exact same, just trying to decide which place i want to live for the next 4 plus years..help...also, where would the opportunities be greatest for internships, post grad opportunities, etc.? thanks. i'm concerned about the extra year because i'm already 49, but think that san diego probably has better schools for middle schoolers (one of which i have at home). a little flustered...
Can a Phd program be completed in 2 years? I am done with my masters and I need to know if I can complete a PhD in 2 years if I rush against time, is it a possibility at all? I will start my courses this fall (06) and is their any chance I can finish by summer of 2008. Is their a technical limitation on the minimum number of years you have to enrol in a doctoral program before graduating? Thanks for all responses so far! Actually, I am not worried about the coursework, load etc etc because I am for all practical purposes a recluse and a workaholic. My concern is mainly if it is allowed legally? Again, Can a graduate (finished masters) complete PhD in two years?
