Applying for college.. Which majors/degrees should i take? Okay, so I am applying for Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia... I was wondering which majors or degrees I should take, if I want to become a doctor (specifically a surgeon)?? I am a bit lost. Are some four-year college degrees, basically certain majors, essentially useless for finding work? I am finishing up a degree in "Interdisciplinary Studies" with my two cores being Computer Sciences and Film/Video/Theatre. This is from basically a regional Liberal Arts college of about 3000 students. I've been told that majors are very much important in determining whether or not you can find a job. Of course, Computer Engineering degrees will be much more helpful than an English degree in getting paid. I know that. My question is this. Could it be true that some majors like, "Interdisciplinary Studies" or "Sociology" or "Electronic Media and Film" or "Theatre" basically leave you with no prospects after graduation. As in, your chances of getting hired for a decent position are no better than had you not gone to college at all. Perhaps maybe a professional certification at a community college would have sufficed? Like, you basically wasted four years of your life on a useless major?? If that's the case, I won't be too upset cuz I still did learn a lot and college gave me a broader insight into life. I'm just wondering if sometimes a college degree gives you NO advantage due to how low that major ranks on employers' lists. So...let me know what you think. Are there majors in college which may give you a B.S/B.A. degree, but you could have gotten the same jobs those degrees give you without having had to attend college at all?? I agree. But what about people who are still unemployed even with legit degrees from Harvard and Yale?

If I were to double major in college, would I receive two degrees or just one single degree? Where can I get a list of colleges offering graduate degrees in Human Sexuality? I am an undergraduate student majoring in Sociology. My ulitmate goal is to gain a graduate degree (Ph.D) in Human Sexuality. I have looked up the American Board of Sexology and The Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS). However, there list doesn't really give all the Universities with graduate oppurtunities. College majors for a future neurologist? Since most medical schools now don't care what you major in, I am looking at undergrad majors. I'm a freshmen in high school, enrolled in PSEO and taking college courses for dual credit in my studies. (e.g. a B.A. in intergalactic relations - don't ask, it was the first thing that came to mind) What I'm wondering is, what would be a respectable college major that will provide alternative job opportunities in the event that I do not make it to medical school? Other than medicine, I've always had an interest in criminal justice/law (it was always a tie when deciding if I wanted to be a lawyer or doctor) and forensic science, but I don't believe I can pursue a medical career while simultaneously working on law/forensic corequisites. International Studies major vs. Psychology major? What are the pros and cons of each? I'm helping my sister decide on her college major. She narrowed the list of available majors at her college down to those two. If so the shape of the economy and whats in demand, also how many degree holders there are in a particular subject, has changed a lot in the past 25 years. What are the different type of business majors? I am a junior in college. My dream was to always go to the University of Michigan and major in some type of business. U of M may be out of the question do to my poor grades in my freshman and sophmore year, but I still am going to college. Question about my college application? I currently attend a two-year junior college and am filling out an application to transfer to a 4-year college. I'm on the section where you list the college that you're currently in. On this section it asks for my degree earned or expected. I am not sure what to put in this section since I will not be earning a degree at my junior college. Any ideas on college majors? I have been stuck on this issue for many months now. I am in the United States Military and am looking to go back to school. I know things that I am good at and would be capable of doing but I don't think that I would want to do certain things for the rest of my life. I could really use public opinion on what others do, what degrees could take me into what jobs, and any other information that one might think could possibly help place me in a career that I would really enjoy doing. I'm going to college for Science but several of my friends have graduated...but I feel like if I was getting a degree in any of the ones I listed below, I would have finished already as well. Pursuing college and career with a GED? I am seventeen years old, and currently home schooled. My "Academic Supervisor" told me that I should consider obtaining a GED. 95% of all colleges and universitys will accept those who complete the general equivelancy developement tests, usually upon completetion of SATS and ACTS. If I were to get a GED for myself, I would go to college, of course. If I get high GED and college entrance scores, I may go directly to a four-year institution, or I could first attend a community college to earn credits toward a degree, or earn an associate's degree first and then transfer to another college or university to continue on toward a bachelor's degree. My question was concerning any limitations that may arise, specifically if I will not qualify for certain majors or degrees. I'm looking for a specific college finding site? There was a website I was on a few months ago. On it you can find colleges and grad schools. There were check-off lists for things like degree wanted, location, etc... But the specific things I remember are: you could chose more than one major through expandable lists and you could chose broad categories or specific ones, and also when it gave you your final list of colleges it told you how difficult it is to get in and what percentage of students the accept. I know there are lots of sites that are similar out there, but I really liked this specific one.

Why do some people think Economics is a useless major? I recently read an article about the most lucrative college degrees, and Economics was listed as one of the highest-paying majors with an average salary of around $48,000. Economics majors according to this article made more than Business Management and even Accounting majors. Is this article realistic or what? Yeah, I personally don't think Economics is easy, but the subject is so powerful that I am willing to study extra hard to learn the material. After working the field for 3 years I received a VA scholorship to any college in the state and have enrolled back at Gadsden State because it's my alumni school and currently major in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration. Is the traditional educational path the best way to go in the current US economy? My parents, family, teachers, and some friends say that I should go to college instead of joining the military or getting a job after high school. I've noticed that most people do have the mindset that going to college (the traditional path, these days) is the ideal thing to do. But I have researched this a bit, and it seems like it may not be as great an idea as most people make it out to be. I mean, if you get a full scholarship to a university, that's one thing - but if you end up having lots of student loans to pay in the future, is the 4-year degree really worth it? I realize education is not about the degree, it's about knowledge, and the degree is secondary; it helps with job opportunities, but your knowledge is what will get you places in life. You can obtain information and knowledge from anywhere, especially with the Internet these days, for free. So is spending thousands of dollars on a college degree, and using up 4 years of your life, really as worth it as people make it out to be? Why should we be hesitant to go a different path? Everybody's telling me I should go to college. I'm not sure how much of it my parents can afford, but regardless of the monetary aspects of the situation, I'm just not sure it's "for me." What other opportunities can I consider straight after high school? I took the ACT once and made a 24, which is supposed to be pretty good. I've heard that it can get me a full scholarship to the local community college, so I guess that would take care of 2 years of school, but I'm not sure how valid that statement is. I try not to believe most things I hear about scholarships and such, because it's often bogus. If I were to go to college... I would go because I WANT to...and I just haven't seen anything on the degree/major list at my state's universities that interest me enough to spend 4 years of my life obtaining a degree in that field. I kind of have an interest in computer science, but I've also considered joining the military in the Information Technology field. It would be valuable experience for job opportunities after military service, assuming I don't make the military a career. I'm a junior in high school, and I'm just sort of stuck. I've never been 100 percent on what I want to do in life. I don't like high school very much. I mean, I like the social aspects of it, but not the educational. A lot of it is very very boring. How do I list an incomplete college education? I went to college for one year after high school and had to drop out due to severe medical problems. I then continued at an online school for about 1 1/2 years and have not taken coursework since. This is because I don't know what field I'll end up in and find it more sensible to find what I want to do first, get an entry level job, and THEN get my degree (I have to pay for my own schooling and can't afford any changes in majors once I get going). Finding out the right college major for me. Suggestions? I am Enlisted in the United States Navy, and am trying to get started on my college degree. A little on my goals (simplified): -Complete college prerequisites -Obtain a bachelors degree -Apply for Officer Candidate School -Go for Pilot, Navy Flight Officer, or Public Affairs Officer. My big thing is helping out others, and I don't mean that to sound like I am a do-gooder, it is almost completely a selfish thing. I love helping out others cause it makes me feel wonderful about myself, so it is a mostly selfish reason, plus I love to make people smile, and help them when they aren't feeling well, kind of like my own personal high. I also want to earn potential and something I can gain experience from. In the future, I look for stability meaning I could work in that area for a long time without the job being on and off. For example, I considered majoring in film. However, I heard that graduates don't work right away and that might not be stable. What can you do with the degree after that? So, I checked out majoring in performing arts. The sad thing is that I love music but I can't play an instrument. I think I have signs of depression...? Okay, so it began last Wednesday when I heard that I have 1 month to decide on a major in college. I've always been an indecisive person, so I really began to struggle with the decision I currently have to make. I've looked at my college's list of majors and none of them stood out to me...yet the ones I tend to like a little bit have disadvantages after graduation. So I am currently in the middle of an identity crisis. I just can't see myself anywhere after college at the moment and it feels like I'm not passionate about anything. For the past week, I've tried so hard to think and decide on something...but still...nothing. And I feel completely worthless, like I'm not serious about college, and I fear what will happen if I decide not to get a degree. I won't be able to respect myself if I don't get a degree from college. It's just that I want to be able to do something that I love, yet at the same time I think way too much, and try to make things perfect, which results in me being so indecisive. I am a good student with a 3.8 GPA right now and I have been really looking hard into majors...but I don't have a major right now that stands out clearly to me. I tried talking to my friends a little bit about this, but I want them to see me as strong. They get annoyed with me when I feel down. My family is just telling me to look at majors and crap. And on top of that, I have a presentation to work on, and an exam to study for this week in college. My sister is going into surgery this Wednesday to correct a birth defect she has. And just all this stuff that is happening at the same time. As a result, I've just been constantly feeling down and sad. I have been eating unhealthy and usually less food each day. I've started going to bed earlier, and my breathing feels deeper and heavier. And I've had a few crying sessions as well. Self confidence has gone way down, and I'm quieter around my friends. I smile and laugh at their jokes, but its only to hide how I'm really feeling. I don't think I've felt this bad for at least 1..possibly 2 years. Despite all this, I'm still trying to tackle these problems, get my studying/projects done, and soul-search for a major. I just want to get out of this, whether or not making a decision on my college major will help me...Idk. I want to know if these are signs of depression or if I'm really just extremely stressed out. I will tell you a bit about myself and my goals and I'm hoping (and would really appreciate it!) if you could recommend a major from the list I'll post a bit further down in this message. My greatest interest of all is wildlife. I also am very interested in the environment, followed by earth sciences and biological sciences. In a future job, I would like the job prospects to be pretty good. I'd also like my job to be with something I love (Who doesn't? lol) and it to be a well-paying job OR have the opportunity for travel, not necessarily both. An important thing to me is having something versatile, i.e. a job where I could live in a large metropolitan area or in the boonies. My ultimate dream would be to have a hands-on job with wildlife as well, but this isn't necessarily something I need, just something I'd absolutely love. I can't think of anything else that would make me more happy. When you think of me, think DNR uniform or zoo. :P I know these jobs are few and far between, which wouldn't fit me, but this describes my top interests perfectly. My worst weakness in school and out is complex mathematics. I don't get it, I never have and never will. As for the list, I've narrowed it down from my school's catalog. My school has a national reputation for agricultural related fields especially (I would mention where I go but feel a bit awkward about it on the 'net, if you really would like to know I can PM it to you lol.) My #1 choice would be Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, but I'm afraid of the job prospects and pay. I was thinking maybe I could eliminate the worry by going for Environmental Management. (Could I do something with wind, solar, etc. power with this perhaps? If it's that versatile that would be great. I'd go for this, but then my ultimate dream of having hands-on work with wildlife and working in a zoo setting is basically null.) My two other choices are Agronomy and Geographic Information Sciences, but I'm not quite as interested but they look good on a practical level and could tie it into my interests of the environment, earth and bio, etc. If you could recommend honestly what a fun and wise choice would be I would appreciate it more than anything! At this point I'm only looking at a bachelor's degree, maybe a master's if my grades and finances hold up but the latter isn't a good guarantee at this point. confused about majors and minors that colleges offer? In general, I get the difference between a major and a minor. Though, when I go to colleges' sites, and click on Academics, they have a list of degree and the word "minor" is not next to it (just B.A or B.S, or neither). I'm confused, for example, a college offers Business Administration, Accounting, Social Science, Philosophy ETC. Can I choose any thing as a minor or as a major/second major? Also, if the college's academics list does not contain, Ex. "Chinese language and culture study" Does that mean that college doesn't even have a Chinese class for students who wants to learn Chinese (just for fun). Or do every/most colleges have Chinese, Spanish, English (for non-English speakers).... classes even if they don't offer a degree for it? I just love foreign languages, and the colleges I'm looking at offer either Spanish or Chinese, but I want to learn both for my own interested. So I have come to that point in my life, I am a rising senior and I need to pick a path for my life, and my biggest fear is to get to college and waist my and my family's money changing majors. Which is the most useful, less competitive, and highpaying degree? Out of these degrees....? Hello there. I am a freshman in college debating which degree to choose out of 3. It's a toss up between Communication Studies, Mass Communications-(specializing in public relations or advertising), or Business Administration. It's getting rather hard for me to keep analyzing over and over. I have asked people I know, talked to advisors, taken aptitude tests but am still ambivalent. The aptitude tests all suggested different fields but all agreed that I have very strong clerical, strong communication, and strong business abilities. I scored extremely high on manual speed and dexterity, manual speed and accuracy, and low on mechanical reasoning. Overall I love writing, communication, and problem solving. All of these qualities can fit into all of these degrees so I would love to get some feedback from actual human beings (not just from books, journals, and government websites.) So which out of the 3 degrees listed, in this economy, would be the most beneficial, less competitive, and high paying? Yes I'm aware money can't buy happiness, you have to love what you do, that's why I picked the 3 degrees I know I would love, I just can't choose between them. Also I wouldn't mind a job that had basic mathematical functions (after all business involves math) but not to the point of heavy concentration and with a complete fixation on it, I'm not a big math person (like most people.) I was cut from my acting program and never finished college - 7 years later I want to go back. Any advice? First some background: About ten years ago, right after graduating high school, I went to college. I had originally applied at a few Universities to their acting programs (only two due to financial reasons - there's always an audition fee), and was accepted to the Universities themselves, but was not accepted into their acting programs (though I did get on the program waiting list at one major college). Another University came my way (which I was "okay" with) and it had a film production program without audition, so I thought I'd try that. I got in, and within a year, I couldn't stand not being in the acting program. So I applied, auditioned, and was accepted. However, due to non-school circumstances, I fell into a depression right after getting accepted (and never identified it until it was too late). My grades all around started falling in all classes, I had trouble focusing, and would often not feel like getting out of bed. So after two more years of the program, I was cut. However, at my mother's insistance, I continued going to the college for the next year, and took as many theatre-related courses as I could to continue following my dream. BUT because I had no solid focus for those four years, I was not able to graduate. Money issues came up and I never thought of "transferring" as an option, so I never finished. So now, I've been acting for the past three/four years consistently, and have gotten many paying jobs, and worked with many good theatres, and am well integrated into the local theatre scene. But I keep feeling like not having my degree is hindering me. Not just as an actor, but in life in general. I haven't told many people what happened to me because I was ashamed and embarrassed. So now I want to go back and fix this. Though I was unprepared for college years ago due to my emotional issues, I have grown (and gotten help) and feel ready now. My concern is that this "cut from acting" thing will be hovering over my head the entire time I am applying. I am scared because I worry that poor grades and/or being removed from another program will make it appear that I either have no talent or am not committed. The other thing is I want to be able to go to one of the colleges I always WANTED to go to. I settled for my school because my mother and guidance counselor had not given me the help I needed in picking, and i was sort of "stuck" with my last choice. There are larger universities that have prestige behind them (or at least a truly solid acting program) that I probably could have attended had I be prepped better for my college search. But I worry I won't be able to put all of these mistakes of the past ten years behind me. On top of that, there are financial concerns. I'm married now. I have fallen into a bit of debt and my credit has been hurt by this recession. But I feel so incomplete. And I want to attend a "good" college that actually has a name behind it. But being in competition with fresh-faced 18 year olds with nothing over them but a high school record and extracirricular activities is quite daunting. I fear they would always get first pick and I will have spent hundreds and/or thousands of dollars on audition fees and travel for naught. Can anyone offer a bit of advice on how I can approach going back to school? Are my fears merely "fears" or is there a lot of relveance to them? I would appreciate any advice anyone has. Why is it taking me so long to graduate college? I'm in my mid 20's. I started college in 2000 as a CS major. I cruised along making the Deans list several times. After 2 years I was set to graduate a year early untill I was stricken with a bout of depression and had to move back home after a dissasterous 3rd year. I tried to complete my degree at a university at home but found out I HATE programing and switched to physics. The later part of my life I've come to suspect I have adult ADHD but not too sure, just a suspicion on my study habits (I NEED 5 hours to get 1 hour of work done when I'm able to do this i do GREAT, if not i fail, WAY to easly distracted). Well I'm going on my 8th year and its getting more depressing and ALOT harder to concentrate. I'm in monster debt and quiting is no longer an option, nor is the military because I'll be 26 soon. Disabled college student searching for job advice? Like many people, I need a job (specifically for the summer). I'm a rising junior in college, double-majoring in both French and English. I live in southeast Virginia, and I'm willing to do any job that I can physically do. I'm in a wheelchair some of the time but I can walk; basically I get tired easily when walking. I'm fluent in French, have been published in a local poetry book, can type 70-80 words per minute, and I have outstanding customer service skills. I've got some volunteer experience, and have excelled in the academic world. I've been on the Deans List since starting college, and have won first place in a statewide French fluency competition, among other things. The problem is I don't have the necessary degrees or minimum experience to be considered for the jobs I am most suited for. Are majors and degrees the same thing? Here's my problem: So I want to major in either counseling or school psychology. One website I went to said that the college I want to go to offers majors in both, but I went to that colleges website and all they said on their majors list was general psychology. Help? ....so if I go and major in general psychology at one college, can I get my degree at the same one? I've been torn for a while now about what I should do for my future, and I was hoping that there were some people out there who could help me out. Here's an outline of my situation: Let me start out with my passion- I love music. I have been in band ever since I was in sixth grade and I have always had a great time with it. I have taken several music classes over the past two years I spent in college, and I had a great time with them as well. Ever since I was a young boy, my dream has been to be a music major in college and become a band director someday. However, there are many factors that are forcing me to have second thoughts now. A past experience- My church had me in charge of a Sunday School class for about six months. I was working with fourth and fifth graders, and honestly, I think it was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in my life. I hated teaching this class. There were so many behavior problems that it wasn't even funny- I got extremely stressed out, and after six months had to tell my minister that I didn't want to do it anymore. Everyone is telling me that being a band director would be different, because I would be working mainly with the older kids and we would be doing something we all like to do... Is this true? II. The pay- I understand that a teacher's annual salary is not very high. As a band director I would be paid a few thousand dollars per year more than a regular teacher, but I am still concerned. Band director's salaries usually start around $40,000 per year. In a world such as today's, would it be possible to live off of this level of income? III. Happiness- Because of my sunday school experience that I outlined above and a few other factors, I worry about whether or not I will truly be happy as a band director. I am not the type of person that likes to be around little kids, and I get frustrated easily when I have behavior problems. I have heard that just because my college degree is in music education doesn't mean the only job open to me is to be a band director. Everyone is telling me that I could get this degree, and then go into something completely different. I am considering minoring in economics- If I didn't like being a band director, how easy do you think it would be to change jobs?

Advice about college major? So it's coming time for me to choose a major. My only problem is that all the majors that seem interesting to me are majors that don't qualify you for high paying jobs, or really any jobs period. The majors I'm thinking of are English, Sociology, Media Production, and Political Science. My dad wants me to major in business, but I suck at math. How do my chances stack up for transfer to USC (California)? Here is my situation. I was not a very good high school student. I started working right out of high school. I have no ACT/SAT scores. College degree is messing up my job opportunities? I have a bachelor's degree majoring in finance. However, that's not something that I wanted to do with the rest of my life, it was just an area that I was naturally good at and planned to use as my "fall back" if I needed one. My real career goal was working with a film production company/studio or at a record label. I've applied to several jobs there in the development, production, and other creative departments, but when they see that I have a degree in finance they either throw it out or ask if I want to do something in the finance department (which I don't). These creative things weren't offered at my university and that isn't something I think you need college for anyway, but the job requires a bachelor's so I list mine....in finance... How can I show them that I just because I have a degree in a different area, it doesn't mean I haven't always wanted to do something creative at heart, and have the skill to do that also? Any advice? Any similar stories? Any resume tips? I was considering taking a certificate course in film production simply to show that it is something I'm interested in, but it might be a waste of money if it doesn't weigh out the finance degree.

I need help finding direction/purpose in my life? ok I'm 24, living at home, and I'm NOT content with my life. I did go to college and graduated (Associates degree), but I am no longer interested in what I went for. The job I have now is pretty stable, pay is decent for the area, but it's so BORING! I have no interest in the company, and I do not see a future with them. I find myself daydreaming often....I still get my work done, and done correctly. I've looked at many college websites majors lists but nothing interests me. I lived on my own during college so that isn't a problem, but I don't want to live in this area. I'm not depressed or anything. I just don't know what to do......... This area is boring. nothing to do except for bars and clubs, and I do not like those places. No job could make me like the area. College Transfer Credits? I am transferring from a community college to a university with an A.A. degree. Is there more to this list than it shows online? Say, if I complete half of them, do I have to take additional electives to reach 60 credits for my B.A. degree? Do most AA degrees require same courses? I was checking out the courses requirement for a number of different degrees in my college. I noticed all the ones under AA required the same type of courses from the list. From 6 credits for communications to 24 for electives and so on. They all were the same. Even Math education and computer science had the same available courses for completion which doesn't make sense to me since they're quite different. The only difference was on the AS degrees which had a "Major Course Requirements".. shouldn't it be the same for all AA degrees?? Otherwise I see no point sorting them.. I would assume however that the courses for a BA or BS should be specially for the Major I chose..

Help with picking major etc.. for college (network security)? I need help choosing my major for college. I want to do something in the network security field, like protecting networks from crackers and working with buisnesses to keep them secure. However there are tons of different majors that all sound really similar and i can't tell which one is best. Terminology - Major vs. Degree? On an online job application, it asks to list my major. I will have B.F.A. in a month. My major is specifically "Communication Design", which is an "Art major" within the college of Liberal Arts at my school. It seems simple, but on the application they give a list of majors to select; communication design is not on there. "Art" is listed, but under Humanities; and still this is not specifically my major anyway. There is an option "Major Not Listed", and provides a space to type it. But I don't know if I should select "Art" from the list, or manually type in my specific major. Please help me out! It's a VERY important application, so it must be perfect...

Possible majors for OCS? After I graduate high school, I would like to start looking for my major and spend two years getting my associates degree at a community college. in my college catalog there not specific on the "other electives" i need 22 credits in so does anything go? in the catalog all it shows is other electives=22 credits. Im in college and I kind of hate it, what should I do? Ok I am going to college (entering junior year spring 2009) and I don’t know what I should do. I hate my major, but no other major's sound very appealing to me. I don’t like science, hate math, not good with computers, and the list goes on. I can’t see myself majoring in anything else. i need help with college!? When i was a senior in highschool i applied to many tier 1&2 private schools and got in.applied to 2 public schools and also got in. i later found that all of the private schools compared to the public school seemed too small, and not to mention expensive... so i chose the public one.. slippery rock... has my major.. and an extensive list of other majors in that department. upon arrival i fell in love! the campus is awesome and everything is great besides i really kept thinking about "wow, when i graduate people will think my degree is a joke because i graduated from SRU( slippery rock university). so i was wondering does a person from a small state school called slippery rock university in the honors college, very involved on campus for example- in a sorority, certified in leadership and diversity, in many smaller clubs still seem less "educated" than a person who went to penn state and did nothing besides school and has a less than average or average GPA? im thinking of transferring to westchester university because its close to home and also pretty cheap, they just dont have my major. i just feel like 6 hours away from home is way too far. so yeah i need suggestions!
