Postsecondary education? What should be the purpose of postsecondary education in the United States? Should the primary focus be a liberal education (that is a college diploma that indicates a person knowledge on certain things, and abilities etc) -- as it currently is. Or should Americans seek other models of the relationship among education, learning, and the knowledge and skills that are needed to keep a job in an increasingly globalized economy?
What kind of postsecondary education should I take? I'm a new immigrant to Toronto. I want to restart my career in the press business. (TV, mag, newspaper, website) I've be a English-Chinese translator and interpreter for about 5 years. I assume that I need to go to a college or university to get a diploma or degree to get myself in the press industry in Canada. What kind of program should I take? What institute should I go to? And is it possible for me to get started a low position in any of this sort of companies? Where should I start?
In general does the North have better postsecondary education than the South? In the south especially out of North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, Auburn, and Clemson they are not that much top 30-50 schools. University of South Carolina, University of Arkansas, University of Kentucky, University of Alabama, University of Tennessee, University of Mississippi, and LSU are not as elite as a Notredame, Perdue, U Mich, U Wisconsin, U Iowa, Ivy League schools, Northwestern, Univ of Illinois, and Univ of Minnesota
Postsecondary Education in UK? I want to study abroad in the UK, specifically Wales or Ireland, when I'm in college, but don't really understand how the whole thing works. I know the classes are a lot more demanding and you have to be more self-motivated than in the states, but how do modules and credits and honours degrees and majors/minors differ from undergrad education over here? Oops! Missed that. I meant Scotland. :]

What is the correct form of 'postsecondary'? I'm writing a personal statement for college, and I want it to be error-free. However, I've asked numerous people and I never get the same answer. If I'm trying to talk about post-secondary education, do I use 'postsecondary', 'post-secondary', or 'post secondary'? This has been wracking my brain for days.
Is the recession actually helping my chances of finding a job? I'm in the field of postsecondary education/faculty. The recession has caused higher enrollment of college students (logically, the recession will last a few years, so they spend those years in school, in hopes of a better economy when they graduate.) Higher enrollment = More faculty opportunities. Has the recession actually delivered a positive impact on job prospects for postsecondary educators?

University of Toronto: are residences open to vacationers? In the course of planning summer holidays, I have stayed with my family at university residences across the country, including St. Mary's in Halifax, the University of Ottawa and the University of Calgary: Does the University of Toronto open its residences to vacationers who are not students? If not, are there other postsecondary education institutions in Toronto that rent unused residence space to weary travelers?
Could you help me find the perfect career for me? I'm interested in physiology (the human body but not surgical procedures)and am involved with sports. With the amount of education needed for Kinesiology being not enough of a challenge and for a Sports Doctor too much of a challenge (I think), IS THERE A CAREER THAT FITS SOMETHING IN BETWEEN? Perhaps needing 5-6 years of postsecondary education? I am a low to mid 90's student in high school, do I have what it takes to be a Sports Doctor?

What are some high paying jobs in Ontario that require little education? i just started university and im regretting my decision to go into Life Sciences. I just cant see myself studying my a** off for over 4 more years. the only reason im here is because of my indecisiveness and my failure to research during high school. So i want to know some career options that require LITTLE postsecondary education. I wouldnt mind going to school for 4 more years, but i definately dont want to go over that. also, i would prefer a career that requires a college education rather than a university one. things like construction, electrician, garbage disposal, etc. are out of the question because i am not physically strong and i sometimes lack logic when it comes to safety.
Do recessions make it easier for college professors to find jobs? Recessions generally lead to increases in students enrolled in school, right? http://www.minnpost.com/bradallen/2010/03/03/16389/mnscu_enrollment_continues_to_grow_as_technical_schools_become_magnet_in_recession Increased enrollment = More teachers get hired So even though it's more difficult to find jobs in most occupations............ does it actually become easier for those to are in the field of postsecondary education?
Is my husband eligible for education tax credits or deductions? I've been trying to figure our taxes with TurboTax, and I've come across some ambiguous phrasing in regards to education. My husband is a senior in his undergraduate degree program, but he's actually been in college for 5 years. However, he has been on the same degree track--it's just been taking him longer because he's not a full-time student. I've noticed that the wording for the American Opportunity Credit says that students who are in the "first 4 years of postsecondary" education are eligible for this credit. Do they mean "years" as in status, (sophomore, senior, etc.) or does it mean literal years. If they do mean literal years and my husband wouldn't qualify, would we still be able to get the tuition and fees deduction? This is so confusing!!
Can someone tell me if these accredations are worth while ? I want to go to a school called Mt Sierra College in Monrovia , CA to get a bachelors degree in Information Technology with a concentration in Information Security. I believe this is a trade school and it is very expensive. Here are the accredations the school has : Accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT), Arlington, VA Approved as a degree-granting institution by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE), Sacramento, CA Authorized by the U.S. Department of Education to offer Federal Loans and Grants to qualified students, Washington, D.C. Are these accredations good enough and should I enroll in the school. How do I know if it is a good school or not . What should I be looking at ?
Can anyone give me info about Baylor University (or other Texas schools)? I'm currently a senior in high school, and I'm planning on majoring in English in order to get a career in postsecondary education. (I want to get a Ph.D. and eventually become an English professor.) Using my high school's grading system, my A.P. weighted G.P.A. is now a 101.48, I got a 1950 on my SAT (Critical Reading, Math, and Writing), I'm highly involved in plenty of extra-curricular activities and I partake in loads of community service. I also take all of my core courses under the A.P. Program and will be graduating under the Distinguished Achievement Program as 4th in my class out of 468. As of now, I'm interested in Baylor University, but other schools including Rice, U.T., and A&M are all considerations as well. So, all of this being said, does anyone have ANY advice for me as to where I should go? Thanks so much!
What's so bad about liberal professors in America? Aren't they part of what's supposedly that best postsecondary education system in the world? http://www.wjh.harvard.edu/~ngross/lounsbery_9-25.pdf The vast majority of Professors identify as liberal. But,there seems to be a sentiment against them among conservatives that's part of an anti-intellectual current that I believe,is historically associated with conservatism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-intellectualism#Rightist_perspective
Can someone elaborate this for me ? Students must have completed the 8th grade, be between the ages of 13 and 19, and have a need for academic support in order to pursue a program of postsecondary education. All students must be either from low-income families or be potential first-generation college students. The program requires that two-thirds of the participants in a project must be both low-income and potential first-generation students. The remaining one-third must be either low-income, first-generation college students, or students who have a high risk for academic failure. What is first-generation college students ??? and how do you know if a student is at a high risk for academic failure ??

"First tier", "second tier", "third tier", "fourth tier" postsecondary institution? What are these actually..? I just read that in Wikipedia about Florida International: "The U.S. News and World Report currently ranks FIU as a fourth tier postsecondary institution in the National Universities category." Well, I am bit unfamiliar with the American higher education system. Could anybody enlighten me more about these whole "tier" system? Officially, which colleges are in the first tier? Then the second, the third, and the fourth? Is there any such thing like fifth tier, sixth tier, and so on? What actually differs those colleges? Between the different "tier"?
Why do illegal alien students get special in state college tuition discounts not available to Americans ? The DREAM Act, which would allow illegal alien students to get special in-state college tuition discounts not available to native-born and naturalized American students, has been resurrected by the Dems. You’ll remember it was a piece of the failed shamnesty bill in the Senate. As I noted during the debate, the Dream Act would repeal a clearly worded provision in the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) that states: Notwithstanding any other provision of law, an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State (or a political subdivision) for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit (in no less an amount, duration, and scope) without regard to whether the citizen or national is such a resident. Ten states defied that federal law and offered in-state tuition to illegal aliens: California, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Washington. The last time the DREAM Act champions tried to tack their scheme onto a larger immigration proposal, they snuck in language that would absolve those ten states of their law-breaking by repealing the 1996 law retroactively–and also offered a special path to green cards and citizenship for illegal alien students. Now, Dick Durbin has announced he will stick the DREAM Act into the House Defense Bill HR1585. The lowdown is here. Durbin’s amendment would also welcome large numbers of illegal aliens into the military (you know, in addition to those the Pentagon has already allowed in). The open-borders lobby couldn’t get shamnesty “comprehensively,” so they are doing it piecemeal, as I’ve warned many times. As before, it’s up to you to slay these mini-amnesty beasts.Contact your congressman here http://www.house.gov/writerep/... The DREAM Act is an opening to all non-U.S. citizens, with extreme preference for those who violate U.S. law, to the financial aid and affirmative action systems. First they increased Federal Student Loan interest rates and used the proceeds to "pay down the budget." Now, they will make America's college students and families bear the burden of educating the entire world. What a way to destroy America's economy and society.

Help! I need reasons for wanting to be in a program.? Upward bound description: Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. If it helps neither my mother or father have went to college, and I have an older brother who didn't even finish high school. The only reasons I can come up with is it will help me better myself for college, and help me financially with college and I have to write a whole paper on why I want to be in the program. Can anyone help me come up with more and longer reasons. Please and Thank u. Also if u need it here is the website: http://www.ed.gov/programs/trioupbound/index.html

Reasonable salary in Amman, Jordan? What is a reasonable salary, for an American spouse of a Jordanian, that can be anticpated if I move back to Jordan with him? I am graduating in 2 months with a Masters Degree in Postsecondary Education: Student Affairs. Thanks for your help.
Universities Don’t Need Any More Money? Fat Cat Universities Don’t Need Any More Money College affordability is a problem, with tuition, room & board averaging above $31,000 a year. Reason to boost government aid, as the incoming Speaker says she will? Nope: That “solution” will only make things worse. Here’s why: Colleges charge outrageous prices knowing that Washington always deflects cost. Consider that qualified students are eligible to receive $4,050 in Pell Grants per year and up to $23,000 per undergrad degree in Stafford Loans (the two main sources of federal student aid). That means there is at least $16,200 in Pell Grants and $23,000 in federal loans currently set aside to offset costs. That’s a whole lot of green college administrators can play with—$39,200 to be exact—when calculating the sticker price. What incentives do schools have to be price-friendly and economically resourceful when the opposite behavior will multiply its piggybank? The government’s “helping hand” gives colleges a perverse market incentive to inflate costs. Think that’s far-fetched? Consider that congressional spending for higher education jumped 686 percent between 1973 and 2005, the Office of Postsecondary Education tells us. Taxpayers shelled out $72.4 billion in 2005 compared to just $9.2 billion (in 2005 dollars) in 1973. Outlays rose 95 percent from 1995 to 2005 alone. Yet this soaring spending has not brought prices down—instead, it’s goosed them up. Tuition’s grown more than twice as fast as inflation over the last 30 years, indeed, faster than the costs of food, clothing, and shelter. Here’s the ironic part. Whenever tuition prices climb, we don’t get angry at the ones actually jacking them up. Politicians don’t probe college presidents over college affordability. Instead, they just whip out Uncle Sam’s (our) checkbook. What assurances have we been given by the new Congress that increasing aid this time around will do what’s been long promised and lower cost? You’d think from the Left’s rhetoric that there’s a direct relationship between more aid and lower prices. Not so. Every time aid increases, tuition increases. The College Board—which tracks all these figures— reports that since Congress ratified the Higher Education Act in 1965, tuition has escalated 44 percent. It’s not like colleges and universities are short on cash, either. The endowments of the nation’s top 50 schools all tower above one billion dollars and sport return on investments (ROI) that would make Morgan Stanley jealous. The big players, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education, contain gigantic investment accounts. Harvard’s endowment is more than $25 billion with a 19.2 percent ROI. Yale’s $15 billion endowment raises the bar with its 22.3 percent ROI, and Princeton scrapes by with an $11 billion endowment backed by a 17 percent ROI. Harvard’s endowment, in fact, is bigger than the gross domestic product of some Latin American countries. The nation’s top 50 colleges and universities are not the only ones sitting on huge investment portfolios. Two hundred and twenty-seven colleges and universities have endowments ranging from $100 million to $900 million. And an additional 141 have endowments that surpass $50 million. Why is it that when ExxonMobil posts record billion-dollar profits amidst soaring oil prices, liberals demand price controls and government investigations? But when colleges post record endowments despite soaring tuition prices, liberals demand more federal funding? It’s just as outlandish for the government to subsidize ExxonMobil as it is for the government to subsidize academic establishments with abnormally deep pockets. Don’t look for Pelosi to probe any college presidents over “windfall” endowments or swelling tuition prices or demand that they pay their “fair share.” At least the extra aid goes toward instruction, right? Wrong! Ohio University Professor Richard Vedder saliently noted that from 1977 to 2000 only twenty-one cents out of each increased dollar spent per student actually covered teaching. So where’s the money being squandered? Administrative salaries and fringe benefits, for starters. Those two categories jumped 26- and 31 percent respectively over the past 5 years, even though the consumer price index only increased by 14 percent. Another reason: bloated staffs and needless vice presidents, deans, provosts, and campus life directors—many of whom are pocketing salaries that average $195,000 a year and controlling six- and seven-figure budgets, reports the Chronicle. Boston University’s administration, for example, includes one president, two provosts, and 11 vice presidents. There’s a vice president for government and community affairs, a vice president for operations, a vice president for auxiliary services, a vice president for information services, and a vice president for enrollment and student affairs, to name a few. Many colleges and universities are administered the same way, clogging staff with too many deans and chief diversity officers who carry out politically correct agendas. We often complain about government bureaucracy growing out of control. The same has been occurring in higher education. As taxpayers, we should demand that Congress review the real reasons behind skyrocketing tuition: federal funding and explosive bureaucratic growth. Pelosi and her liberal allies in Congress do not plan on addressing these concerns. Instead, their sights are set on dumping even more of our money into higher education—a move that will only expand the problem of affordability while allowing schools to amass even larger fortunes on the backs of beleaguered American taxpayers.
Pregnant Teenager? What advice would you give to a pregnant teenager who doesn't have the support of their family? What responsibilities is that person guaranteed to have to face in the future?Do you guys know anybody who had a baby as a teenager and went on to postsecondary education?Basically do you think a pregnant teenager can manage if she has the support of the babys father, and not the support of her family but the babys fathers' family? She's positive that the childs father is going to stay because the baby fathers' father left him when he was a kid basically as soon as he was born.He never had any contact or communication with his father even though they lived on the same island. That really bothers him even to this day.He can't be a hypocrite he said you know. But the pregnant teen can and will finish school.Because if she is pregnant their is only 6 more months of school, and it is a guarantee that her exams can be pushed forward so that she is able to take them. She is already studying for her drivers license, and she is already looking for her a job. She's thinking of taking a year off from school while working to raise the kid, then after she plans to go to school.
Why do people lie about the DREAM act? WHy do people lie about the DREAM act?? are they just really that hateful to not want good hardworking students to be able to stay in the country they grew up in? or are they that misinformed? he DREAM Act would: Not grant “massive amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.” This bill has been narrowly tailored to only include students willing to pursue postsecondary education and military careers. Not mandate states to provide in-state tuition for undocumented students. Instead, the DREAM Act would eliminate the current ambiguity of federal law and give states the right to determine eligibility for higher education benefits. In addition, the bill would allow undocumented students to become eligible for the federal student loan and federal work-study programs to help finance their education. Not grant “amnesty to illegal immigrants no matter how old they are.” The DREAM Act clearly states that only those that have “not yet reached the age of 35 years on the date of the enactment of this Act” would qualify. Also, students would need to have arrived in the country before their 16th birthday and have been present for “5 continuous years prior to the enactment of this Act.” Not waive the high school graduation or GED eligibility requirement due to “hardship.” Again, the bill language clearly states that undocumented students may have their conditional status removed through “hardship exception” only if the student “demonstrates compelling circumstances” for not fulfilling the higher education or military requirement; demonstrates that removal from the country would cause “exceptional and extremely unusual hardship” to their spouse, parent, or child; have maintained good moral standing. In other words, the bill would not waive eligibility requirements such as high school graduation. Not result in the loss of “seats” at colleges and universities for other students. The capacity for the American higher education system to absorb additional enrollments is far from being exhausted. In fact, even in the realm of four-year colleges, space is plentiful. Each May, our association publishes a list of between 200 and 300 four-year colleges with space still available after most students have already made their decisions about where to go to college. While much of our nation’s popular focus on “college” is, in fact, on the most highly-selective four-year colleges, the truth of the matter is that there exists a full range of postsecondary institutions which, taken together, will continue to have space for students well into the future. http://www.nacacnet.org/PublicationsResources/Admitted/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=151
Can I claim the American Opportunity Credit on Form 8863 for 2009? At SMSU I am considered a senior and will graduate come May, so this would be considered my 4th year of postsecondary education (even though I have been attending college since 2003). But I am wondering how the IRS sees this. I meet for all other qualifications of this credit: --enrolled in 2009 leading to a degree --at least one half the normal full time workload --no felony for possessing or distributing a controlled substance The only one that is questionable is this requirement— “As of the beginning of 2009, the student had not yet completed the first 4 years of postsecondary education (generally, the freshman through senior years of college), as determined by the eligible institution. For this purpose, do not include academic credit awarded solely because of the student’s performance on proficiency examinations. So its confusing to me…..do I go by my first 4 tax years of education (2003-2007) so that I am not eligible, or does it go by credits earned by the institution….if so it would be my 4th year in post secondary (and makes me eligible) in 2009......
taxes -- hope credit -- 2 years?? for the hope credit it says you can take it for the first 2 years of postsecondary education. does this mean 2 years as in 730 days after starting college, or until an associates degree is completed. if i went part time to college for 4 years and the fifth year went full time and completed a 2 year associates degree could i claim the hope credit the fifth year if i have never previously claimed it?

Student Loans? I'm currently in grade 12, and I'm in the process of applying to universities and for student loans. On the OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) website, they only have applications for 2006-2007 and 2007-2008. For the 2007-2008 application, I would fill out the form that indicates I'm in a postsecondary program that STARTS any time between August 1, 2007, and July 31, 2008. There is no application on the OSAP website for the 2008-2009 school year, which is when I'll be in university. So, when do I apply for OSAP? When I'm already IN university? I thought that you apply for student loans in grade 12, right before you start your postsecondary education.

**Anybody need a job?** **Now Hiring** ((Not Spam)) %%Please Read%%? 8. Teacher From postsecondary education to elementary schools, there are opportunities for students to learn virtually. Along with that, come opportunities to teach (and tutor) virtually. While distance learning is not new, advanced technology, collaborative multimedia software designed for schools and high-speed Internet connections have created more opportunities for teachers and students to work together from afar, says Fell. Durst has also noticed more teacher jobs being posted, and she knows of one professor who works mainly online and makes six figures -- although income "depends on how many hours you're applying to it and the type of classes you're teaching." A resource center for online teaching jobs is available at GetEducated.com. 9. Writer/Editor Yes, the print publishing industry has been suffering, but Durst is seeing frequent listings these days for writing, editing and proofreading, particularly for the Web. Even those without writing experience can join the b Well this really isn't a question, but i browse through this category and see many people in search of jobs in which people are interested in working from home. 9 times out of 10, those online opportunities are SCAMS! So i decided to post this article i found featured on yahoo to show some of you LEGIT opportunities that are online. Please tell me what you think. Comments? Concerns? Let me know!! Thanks. 1. Virtual Assistant This is a field with much potential, in part because the title description covers many things. "You can fit your offerings to what you know how to do," says Foster. One can own a virtual assistant business or work from home for a company that makes you available to other employees or clients. Homewiththekids.com, for example, currently features a dozen such companies. Small businesses hire virtual assistants to help when they can't justify a permanent employee. The International Virtual Assistants Association, which Durst co-founded in the 1990s, began with 28 members and has grown to more than 600, who charge from $15 per hour to more than $100 per hour. 2. Medical Transcriptionist As Foster knows, being a medical receptionist is a demanding job, and nearly every company listed on her site seeks applicants with experience and/or training from certain schools. The work involves listening to and typing up dictation from doctors -- some of whom have difficult accents, slur words together, and even "eat, drink, chew gum (and) talk to other people in the room" while dictating, she says. But hearing about medical matters can be interesting, and good transcriptionists are in very high demand. Expect initial earnings of less than $10 per hour, but some transcriptionists earn $20 or more per hour. 3. Translator Those with fluency in more than one language translate audio files or documents, not just word for word but often with cultural differences in mind. "Companies can access home-based translators with hard-to-find language skills without being held back by geographic location," says Fell. Foster's site lists 15 companies that seek home-based translators. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook 2008-09, which groups translators and interpreters, notes a projected employment increase of 24 percent over the 2006-to-2016 decade, much faster than the average for all occupations. The national mean hourly wage for translators and interpreters was $20.74, with a mean annual wage of $43,130 as of May 2008, according to estimates by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some industries pay significantly higher, with the highest paying jobs generally in the management, scientific and technical consulting services areas, in which the mean hourly wage was $56.50 and the annual mean wage was $117,530. 4. Web Developer/Designer Information technology is the sector, Durst says, where most of the home-based hiring is being done. Terri Orlowski, a virtual assistant and Web developer based in Ledyard, Conn., offers services such as custom Web site design, template modification and redesigns, code updates, hosting, and usability reviews. She previously held administrative positions in a variety of industries, and makes a higher per-hour rate now. The job is in high demand. Of the more than 15,000 new monthly work-from-home job postings on Odesk.com, Web developers are in the greatest demand, says spokeswoman Elizabeth Gordon. A list of companies that post at-home tech jobs is available at ratracerebellion.com. 5. Call Center Representative When you phone to order something from a catalog or infomercial, a big office with rows of cubicles may come to mind. But the person on the other end of the line is likely to be sitting in a home office. "It's a huge and growing industry," says Durst of companies that hire independent contractors to take calls from home. She says the "home-shore movement" started in response to complaints about the many companies that looked offshore for workers. While some Web sites, such as Alpineaccess.com, actually hire representatives, most use subcontractors. Just be aware that the pay may be by the minute rather than by the hour, so you may not be paid for time you spend waiting by the phone. A list of companies that hire call center reps can be found at Homewiththekids.com. 6. Tech Support Specialist Call centers also hire technical support specialists to work remotely. Kate Lister, co-author of "Undress for Success: The Naked Truth About Making Money at Home," names it as one of her top three "best-bet work-at-home jobs." And according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, jobs for computer support specialists (on-site and remote combined) were expected to increase by 13 percent from 2006 to 2016 -- much faster than the average for all occupations -- with 71,000 new jobs. 7. Travel Agent Scams abound in the travel industry -- particularly organizations that charge for information on how to break into the field. Bu
How to deal with adult jealous sibling? I have an older sister (6 years older) who I do not get along with at all. In public situations she makes fun of me in any way she can think of whether it be I accidentally spill something or say something that might not be quite right or my shirt is slightly wrinkled. I have been putting up with this for years and I think I have had enough. My one sibling says that they notices it and so do my other siblings and other extended family and they think she is jealous of me. She is morbidly obese, I am normal weight. She did not do well in postsecondary education and has a low paying job. I have a diploma and have a good paying job. Our house is nicer; hers is run down. But, there are things that she has that I would like such as supportive in-laws, outgoing personality, ect.. but I do not feel jealous of her. I am happy for her for these things and when something good happens I always congratulate her and show interest. With me though, if something good happens she either doesn't acknowledge it or says something rude with the congrats. I get along with my other siblings well and none of my other siblings have issues with her. What can I do? I'm in my late 20s and she is in her 30s. I do not want this to go on forever. It makes social situations feel weird too.
Help me correct this research paper please? Walkouts of the Chicano Movement Beginning in the 1960s, activist, sometimes radical, organizations became known as the Chicano Movement. This was also during the elevation of the national civil-rights movement. The Americans of Hispanic descent known as Latinos or in this case Chicanos have come to an understanding that they are being exploited, discriminated against and treated unequally whom have called for a social change. This fight for civil-rights for the Chicano community has made a direct impact on the youth of this society. High school students have felt cheated out of equal education, those same students who have parents that struggle with similar situations such as unfair employment and housing. The Chicano youth gave up tolerance for academic prejudices and discrimination against Mexican-Americans and begun to pass on the encouragement of better education for all students of Los Angeles. Groups of students created an alliance with all surrounding schools, initiating meetings that developed a call of action that later became the Walkouts. It was one of the most empowering protests because the voices of young minority were being heard. Students from schools like Lincoln High School, Belmont High School, and Roosevelt High School walked out of class at the same time to meet on the streets of Los Angeles to chant “Si Se Puede!” and have “CHICANO PRIDE! STAND AS ONE” signs (Walkout). These students could not go unheard, one of the main concerns at the time was certain events and situations were considered untrue or insignificant if it was not broadcasted on the news of the local radio stations or appeared on television. Now that has changed for the Chicano community for they did not give up until everyone knew about it and now the walkouts are set in history. This event is a great example of rebellion against authority because it holds the elements of questioning authority in which I have created. One, analyzing all facts that you do not agree with. Two, gathering support from outside individuals. Three, organizing a call of action. Four, executing the action. Five, dealing with the consequences whether it was successful or not. Six, repeating steps 1-5 until satisfied with the outcome. As shown in the HBO film, Walkout , Mexican history was not found in the history textbooks, Spanish speaking was not allowed in classrooms, and the drop out rates for Chicano students were high while the expectancy of a Mexican-American to attend college was low. These students experienced this neglect each day which only created ambition to fight for their rights as citizens. Several times they were told to stay away from “trouble” especially from their own parents. But by doing so that would only prolong any positive social change. The students have taken risks of expulsion from school, and loss of graduation privileges, by going against school rules only to demonstrate how serious of a problem the academic disadvantages in schools of Los Angeles. High school students were granted support by Mexican-American activists in universities, who later called for reforms in public school, including hiring of Mexican American teachers. The group that existed at this time whom created a prolific effect on society was known as La Raza Unida (Roberto 4-5). Many community leaders were considered conspiracy indictments to this act against authority were arrested as too were members of groups like La Raza Unida. Going against authority did have consequences for high school students as well, the day of the protest students were knocked down and beaten with the pitons of the officers that were regulating the walkouts if the students did not abide by the commands given (as shown in Taking Back the Schools VIDEO). These acts against authority did create great controversy but without a debate there would not be the positive growth in education and the Chicano society as there is today. A study shown in 2000 called the Regional locale and enrollment by race/ethnicity in California public high schools states, 209 high schools in the state of California have a majority of Chicano/Latino students enrolled. The average proportion of Chicano/Latinos in these schools was 70.6% (Teranishi NYU). The White majority is still the highest population for California in the public school system with Chicanos running closely second. California continues to seek a public higher education system; it is referred to as the largest, most comprehensive, and most distinguished in the United States (California Postsecondary Education Commission 1998). Many of the high school students involved in the 1968 protests attended UC and Cal State Universities the following school year. This made it clear for them to see that even the youth can make a change in society and politics. This further encouraged increased number of registered voters and activists in the college level. Unfortunately, still to this day our society experiences unequal educational opportunities, eligibility and college going rates from public high schools to higher education. Students attending Black and Latino schools were less likely to apply, be admitted or enroll in UC system than at the predominately White or Asian schools (Allen professor at University of California, Los Angeles). Each time an individual questions authority for a positive outcome it increases the growth of our society whether it is 1% or 40% difference.
OSAP Loans? I'm currently in grade 12, and I'm in the process of applying to universities and for student loans. On the OSAP website, they only have applications for 2006-2007 and 2007-2008.
Do you think your tax dollars? should go to help cities that do not insure the money is used for US taxpayers? " WASHINGTON – A new analysis shows that California would get a whopping $21.5 billion under an economic stimulus plan that's expected to be approved by the House next week, making it the biggest winner among the 50 states. That's according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, which analyzed the new spending proposals offered by House leaders. Don't take that money to the bank quite yet because the numbers are moving targets. Congressional offices were still trying to digest the mammoth package on Friday. And the Senate has yet to offer its plan. And even though the proposed amount is equal to about half of California's projected $40 billion state budget deficit over the next 17 months, it's unclear how much of the federal aid would close the state gap. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is not recalibrating his budget assumptions to account for federal dollars because it remains unclear what amount of money California will ultimately receive and in which form, said Department of Finance spokesman H.D. Palmer. He does not want leaders to reduce cuts or tax increases with an undefined pot of federal money in current state budget talks, Palmer said. The governor's proposed budget includes $4.7 billion in borrowing that the state would have to repay by June 2011, and Palmer said Schwarzenegger's "first priority" for federal money would be to eliminate the need for that loan. State Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, said earlier this week that the federal funding California receives "will be significant and essential, but it will be additive to the cuts we make and the revenues we're able to gain." Whatever happens, it's clear that states are in line for a big chunk of money under the Democratic proposals floating in Washington. On Thursday, staffers of the House Transportation Committee estimated that California would receive $4.5 billion to spend on highways, bridges and other projects. But that's only a small part of the overall package, as the new numbers make clear. Other stimulus money would be aimed at programs for child care, job training and energy assistance for the poor, among other things. House Democrats say the overall package would create or save up to 4 million jobs in the next two years. Under the House Democratic plan, the biggest source of aid to states – $79 billion – would be reserved for a state fiscal stabilization fund. California would get $7.8 billion under that program alone. The lion's share of the money for the stabilization fund – 61 percent – would have to be spent to support K-12 and postsecondary education, according to the state legislators' conference. The remainder could be spent on public safety and other government services. Some House Republicans are criticizing the scope of the package, which Democrats are promising to finalize by next month. The House Democratic plan also includes $275 billion in tax cuts. " Breaks down as follows... My life is REALLY going nowhere... not to mention meaningless... Please help? Life is going nowhere and is completely boring. All the things I loved don't bring me satisfaction/happiness anymore. Reading, drawing, sewing, collecting, work, etc. just leaves me empty; trying to motivate myself doesn't work as I get only halfway through and as it goes nowhere, I give up. I have tried setting goals, trying new activities but to no avail. Even when I complete a goal, nothing (Like when I did a fashion show last year and was the only designer to get a standing ovation, I didn`t feel anything). Daily activities/hobbies have become “motions” to go through. My psychologist and I have gotten nowhere on these feelings and I want to end it. I have friends but have become "bored" of them yet like them at the same time. Same for all the people in my life. Hanging out with different social groups doesn’t work. I am bored with myself. Collecting books doesn’t give joy. So I now collect expensive, beautiful lingerie sets. I have many and I don’t even intend to wear them. I just buy them mechanically. Keeping busy, ironically, makes me more restless. I am taking a year off before university and I don’t want to go anymore. It’s not because I have decided not to pursue a postsecondary education point blank; it`s pointless to go if life is meaningless. These feelings started in gr.9 and are at their worst, now that I am 18, especially last month as this apathy/boredom has sunk in. I find it hard to resist the urge to throw myself in front of cars when I cross the street, drown myself when I bathe, and the kitchen knives keep calling. On two occasions these urges were so strong that A) I wanted so bad to swallow that bottle of Advil staring right at me from the cupboard and B) I wandered outside, crying in the snow, because I wanted so badly to throw myself in front of the cars at night. Religion doesn’t help. Reading about evolution has crushed my belief; spirituality means nothing. I still can`t figure out the meaning of life. And no, don`t tell me life has meaning if I give it meaning. Living with my parents makes suicide a no go. I have found some books at the library about suicide methods and how to go about them. I never asked to be born, so don`t tell me either to be grateful for being healthy, non-handicapped, etc. I would turn to booze and drugs, but I do not like alchohol AT ALL. I have tried but can't. Drugs is a whole other story. I DO have a psychologist... it has gone nowhere so far. Exercise and eating healthy used to make me feel good, but negative body image messed that all up and I gave up. I couldn't get thin enough or shaped the way I liked, so pointless.
Teachers, I am a parent and my school district wants to implement these changes in testing.... We already have some schools operating on a four day week and yet others have implemented a no homework policy until high school. Now they want to make the following changes to the testing system. Is this a good thing or should I seriously consider moving to another state. Panel proposes elimination of three types of tests: 1. Core testing (end of level CRTs) in all grades 2. Basic Skills Competency Test 3. Iowa Test of Basic Skills (nationally normed) Panel proposes the following assessments: 1. Computer‐adaptive testing K‐12 in reading, language arts, math and science three times each year including a pretest and posttest in each subject 2. After 3rd grade, once a student has shown proficiency at or above grade level over three years, the student no longer needs ongoing reading assessments 3. Kindergarten assessment using locally developed assessment 4. EXPLORE in the 8th grade for all students to measure preparedness for high school and prescribe high school coursework 5. PLAN in 10th grade for all students to measure high school performance and prescribe further coursework for preparedness for postsecondary education and training 6. Accuplacer (college placement test) in spring of 11th grade for all students to determine their academic needs prior to graduation 7. ACT in 11th grade for all students to measure high school performance Panel proposes to increase expectations for a high school diploma: 1. Basic diploma to be awarded to students who demonstrate proficiency on at least one of the following assessments – Accuplacer (college placement test) ACT score in 11th grade PLAN score in 10th grade Performance on the Computer‐Adaptive Assessment, beginning with 10th grade performance Panel proposes continuation of federally‐mandated testing: 1. NAEP will be given in grades four and eight in randomly selected schools Let me say that I am all for more homework, better pay, smaller classrooms, and more individualized education. Throughout life we have to prove our knowledge and competencies. Why are we getting away from that for students?
DREAM Act could bring additional students what about Americans when did we stop counting? The College Board took a step in announcing its full support of legislation that could give citizenship to thousands of illegal aliens. Although it has been introduced into Congress multiple times since its inception approximately eight years ago, the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2009 has received more support than other versions have in the past. The DREAM Act is a reform that, if passed, creates a bypass of immigration laws that would allow undocumented inhabitants of the United States to gain permanent citizenship if they meet certain criteria. In a report written for the College Board by Roberto Gonzales, a professor of social work at the University of Washington School of Social Work, the figure of undocumented students graduating high school per year is more than 60,000. “The DREAM Act would provide 360,000 undocumented high school graduates with a legal means to work and attend college. [The act] could provide incentives for another 715,000 youngsters between the ages of 5 and 17 to finish high school and pursue postsecondary education,” according to the report. In order to receive the bill’s benefits, undocumented students must have been in the country for five years (from the date the bill is enacted), be 15 years old or younger at the time they entered the country and be of “good moral character,” according to the bill, which was introduced in the House and Senate simultaneously. http://www.newsrecord.org/sections/news/dream-act-could-bring-additional-students-1.1748019 Using a social security number that is not yours is a felony. We do not allow anyone to profit or benefit from crime, which is why drug dealers have their money confiscated, as well as cars, homes, and anything else bought with that money. As such, illegals don't even have the right to keep salaries, much less anything bought with them or get a refund or social security back. That's insane! That is tainted money -- ill-gotten gains -- earned during the commission of a crime (a felony, no less). And no, 6.2% for SS and 6.2% for medicare doesn't come close to paying for the services they use. chuckles... No human is illegal, but their status in the United States may be that the entered illegally. It does not matter from what country of origin, it matters that they did not enter through a legally defined process. As such the only rights that should be accorded to persons of this status is deportation as swiftly as possible. if you can't feed em, don't breed em!!!!!!!!!!
How should you market to non-traditional students? The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) acknowledges there is no precise definition for non-traditional student, but suggests that part-time status and age are common elements in most definitions. In a 1996 study the NCES included anyone who satisfies at least one of the following as a non-traditional student[1]: Delays enrollment (does not enter postsecondary education in the same calendar year that he or she finished high school); Attends part time for at least part of the academic year; Works full time (35 hours or more per week) while enrolled; Is considered financially independent for purposes of determining eligibility for financial aid; Has dependents other than a spouse (usually children, but sometimes others); Is a single parent (either not married or married but separated and has dependents); or Does not have a high school diploma (completed high school with a GED or other high school completion certificate or did not finish high school). My question is: Based on the above information and perhaps your own knowledge, how do you suggest a typically tradtional 4-year University not known for adult students, go about marketing to non-traditional students? Any ideas? Thoughts? Websites? Research? Articles? All would be appreciated!
would someone please give me their opinion on my essay? Is not a long essay? This was the question i hade to write an essay about: "Does the end justify the means?" You take a given situation and weight the pros and cons of one course of action over another, and the one with more pros is justified. If the mean employed will accomplish what we have in mind and the benefits of that action have values, then yes, the ending will justify the means. This quote has been debated over time and many people based their conclusions over the issue of “protecting the majority” but this quote also applies to other real life phenomenon. For example; I’m writing this paper to get a good grade, writing the paper will be the “mean” and getting the good grade will be the “ending”. Before writing this paper I sat down and weighted the pros and cons of writing the paper. At the end I concluded to write the paper; first because I need the grade to get the credit for the class and second because I need the class to graduate. Not only the pros trigger me to sit and write the paper, but the value each benefit or pro had. If I want to succeed in life, I must have postsecondary education and in order to accomplish it, I need to graduate from high school. The ending will be justified the means when it comes to “protecting the majority”. One would say killing, stealing, lying, etc, is wrong but when the majority will be protected then I say its justified. For instance, in order to stop a train and save hundreds of people in it a couple of lives must be risk. Wouldn’t be just to sacrifice a couple of lives over hundreds of lives? I think so. When deciding if the means are justified by the end, you should always take in consideration of the means will accomplish what you have in mind and if what you have in mind has a great value.
I need help with a dumb question for school, What kind of education does a singer/actress need? The options are: :Doctoral or Professional Degree :Masters Degree :Bachelor + Work Experience or Certification :Bachelor Degree :Associate Degree :Postsecondary Vocational Certicate :Long-term on-the-job training :Moderate-term on-the-job training :Short-term on-the-job training :No High School Diploma ________________________________________________ I thinkn for me I should say No High School Diploma because I am auditioning for Disney Channel now, so If I get picked up I won't have my diploma yet since i'm 14 I will be trying to get it while i'm still acting.
Does the success of your future depend on EQ(Emotional quotient) and motive rather than a scale of grades? After reading all these websites, http://www.macleans.ca/education/postsecondary/article.jsp?content=20070910_109139_109139 http://www.alfiekohn.org/teaching/fdtd-g.htm http://www.pennylicious.com/2006/10/09/billionaire-dropouts/ http://lifehacker.com/software/students/why-you-dont-have-to-get-straight-as-in-college-329717.php http://thewaronbullshit.com/2007/07/24/bad-grades/ http://www.education-reform.net/dropouts.htm and reading neurological, sociological, psycological blogs. Do grades really matter to the successfulness of your life or is it just a standard scale of intelligence? Yes I know I posted this twice, but only because I'm unsure where it goes. After reading all these websites, http://www.macleans.ca/education/postsecondary/article.jsp?content=20070910_109139_109139 http://www.alfiekohn.org/teaching/fdtd-g.htm http://www.pennylicious.com/2006/10/09/billionaire-dropouts/ http://lifehacker.com/software/students/why-you-dont-have-to-get-straight-as-in-college-329717.php http://thewaronbullshit.com/2007/07/24/bad-grades/ http://www.education-reform.net/dropouts.htm and reading neurological, sociological, psycological blogs. Which do you suppose ending up successful? The CEO, professors, theorists, or the creative emotionally intelligent obessesed people that consider other subjects obselete to their future career success? It all comes down to the fundamental level of learning motive and the continous need of the knowledge from irregular abstract resources doesn't it? Necessity is the mother of invention, I suppose. Someone who is willing to work hard enough to get good grades is probably going to work hard enough to be successful in life and have the intelligence to do it. It's really about working smart, and not hard, as you see many entrenpeuteurs don't follow the standard path which everyone follows, they don't have that motive to change the world, yet they may suceed in their career, however, suceeding in careers, don't make you well known or really happy, does it? I agree to never give up on your dreams. If you read the articles above, you will see the perspectives, of why grading doesn't show your potential or how your qualities which help you suceed like EQ, emotional quotient, or SQ social quotient, both suppress IQ, I believe. http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At73uqt1k.VfygA4F1QcSNvAFQx.;_ylv=3?qid=20071208102323AA4K6Vi
To Become a Biology Professor? My Question To Become a Biology Professor.? Hi, Im a freshman in high school but i want to get my future straight. ive been doing my "homework" on being a biology professor but no website just gives me the steps in degrees, exactly how long time it would take me, pay, etc. im only interested in Cellular Biology/Human Anatomy. i know i want to start as an assistant professor, for a few years until i get published and experienced.. i know 4yr college is better, but how much is the difference in pay and everything between the two? (4yr vs. 2yr) & could anyone please just list the degrees iwould need and would i major in postsecondary/adult education or biology? or do i do both? which one would be my major & minor, if not? i live in GA, so i know the average mean salary is less that the average US one. i love biology (as if you couldnt tell by my little nickname thing), i do very well in school, all subjects, and i take all gifted/advanced classes. i understand i need to take more biology classes, chemistry, math, and technology classes and i have already planned those with my counselor. What colleges cover what i want to do? (if you could just give me a website, thatd be great.) i understand the pays low until you're at the tail end, the work is demanding, and school just to get there is going to cost alot and be very time-consuming. pleaseee help.
California Coast University? I can't find anything bad about them. It's an online school, and I was planning to obtain my Bachelors degree in Psychology and then maybe transfer. My question is, will it be respected? Because it's nationally accredited, but they have a big list of employers who accepted it with no problem. How important is it to go to an ABA accredited Paralegal program in California? I've been working as a Legal Assistant (with an unrelated BA degree) for the past 4 years now and I'm trying to get a certificate so I can be fully certified/authorized. The California Business and professions code states that you don't have to go to an ABA accredited program to get your certificate in Paralegal studies but how important is it that the school is ABA accredited? Do employers actually care if the school is ABA accredited? Does it make a difference? What if its accredicted just not by the ABA (#2 in the below citing) Calif. Here is a table of counts of subject classified by pet ownership status and education level: Education level,Non-pet owners,Dog owners, Cat owners Less than high school,421,93,28 High school graduate,666,100,40 Postsecondary,845,135,99 Note that “Dog owners” and “Cat owners” designate individuals who own a dog only or a cat only, respectively. Individuals who own a dog and a cat are not included in this table. Analyze the data. Include numerical and graphical summaries as well as a significance test. Summarize your results and conclusions. My answer: X^2 (chi-square distribution) = 23.1468 df = (r-1) (c-1) = 4 P-value= 0.000118 However, I don't know how to summaries my answer. Please someone help me... I though chi-square is: Ho: there is no association between education and pet owned. Ha: there is association between education and pet owned. If so, P-value <0.05, we reject Ho and accept Ha. Is this correct?
How many Americans are EXCITED about Obama USING tax payer money to pay the tuition of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS? Congressmen Howard Berman (D-CA) and Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), announced the reintroduction today of the DREAM Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. This legislation will restore the States’ rights to determine residency requirements for higher education benefits - giving states the option to provide in-state tuition.
