What is the best encouragement in the pursuance of being a doctoral degree holder?

- More money in most cases. Some people thing prestige.
- You should really want to do it. It is something that will get several years of your life. I am doing it just because I want to work to the academia. Prestige is a reason to do a PhD and money another
- The reason to get a PhD is that you really want to pursue a career path that requires one. Graduate school is more time consuming than difficult. The academic work takes more time than undergraduate work (for the same number of credits) and most people work to help pay for their education. The people who don't complete their degrees are not less academically able. They just tend to find that after a few years in grad school other career paths become more attractive. The people who make it through PhD programs are the ones who were passionate enough about what they wanted to hang in there. So, if you are considering this because it seems easier than something else, its not. If you really want to teach at the college level or pursue some other path that requires a PhD, go for it.
