What education/experience would help someone move up in the grocery store business/corporation?

I have a friend who wanted me to ask this online since he doesn't have Internet. He works as a cashier right now and was thinking about possibly pursuing a career in the grocery store business, but wants to move his way up. He wants to move up past the usual cashier/manager positions to corporate business, or other areas higher than what he's at right now. He wants to know what type of education/experience/areas he needs for a resume, and what to do for networking, etc. Does anyone have any practical advice?

  1. A 2 year degree at a community college has always been adequate to be an Assistant Store Manager. We don't know if that will change due to the economic downturn. Everyone is moving down the job ladder. College graduates are applying to work as Produce Managers when that was traditionally a high school diploma job..
