What undergraduate degrees can you have in order to get a masters of education?

I have an Organizational Interpersonal Communications degree, and I want to be a middle school english teacher. I want to be able to teach in any state, not just have limited certification. I was mistaken before when I thought any bachelors degree could be matched up with any masters degree.

  1. This really depends on what state you live in. In CA, it does not matter what degree you have as long as you pass the CBEST and the CSET examsand fulfill prereqs. CSET tests are organized by subject (multiple subject for elementary, and single subject depending on what subject you want to teach in middle/high schools.) The CSET exams are difficult and people usually get a degree in the subject they want to teach in because taking all those classes helps you pass the subject. Some schools do not accept credentials from other states (especially public schools.) However, there is a test to receive national certification (after you receive state certification). I am going to assume that this process/exam is not an easy one, because it is not common among the teachers I know to be nationally certified. Basically, forget about being able to teach in any state. That's not a realistic short term goal. Figure out where you want to teach, and then check out the requirements. Fulfill prereqs/necessary exams and apply to grad school. Once you know that teaching is definitely what you want to do and you have some experience under your belt, check out national certification. Good luck!
