Career Path Suggestions?
I am in my thirties, and have primarily been in theatre and acting until now. I am in NYC, and the acting thing is at a standstill. I'm looking for other avenues, even a training program of some sort (not a four-year college at this point). Does anyone have any suggestions on exploring a new career path for a performer?

- Lot's of ideas and one compliment: congratulations for surviving so long in the performing arts! Kudos. A method I have found helpful for self and others: a) What excites you. b) Where/when do other's encourage you. c) What/where are you effective. Excite - Encouraged - Effective define the type of career most of us would like. My guess is you like to be in front of people. In performing arts you create/develop an intangible flash connection with people, so I'd go for some form of receptionist/matre de type role.
- My brother was/is a arts and theater teacher at a private school, for a while he was bummed with his job (after an administrative change) and until he found his new job he picked up work at a theatrical supply company...how about that until the "biz" picks back up...it will keep you kind of close to theater, you might have some insight since you have been on stage and through the grapevine it might lead to open casting calls etc.. Best wishes
- Sales is based on acting but I have a feeling you're beyond retail. The best teachers are repressed actors. I work in home care and use that to tell funny stories and act semi- outrageous, it makes them laugh and that is the best medicine. Don't lose your gift just because you need money. Use it to make your life and others better even if it isn't on the stage. Wish you all the best.
- Sounds like you love people and communicating. Internet Marketing seems to be a natural for you. I really think you should check this field out. I have and I like a company that you can get details on by going to: http://TopFreedoms.com They offer serious $$$, freedom, challenge, a real future, and a chance to help people in need of help. You can also be your own boss and because it is your own business enjoy mega tax deductions. When you go to the site be sure to fill in all 5 lines on their brief form. I did and best move I have made in years.
- I love that actors and other performing artists really think outside of the box when it comes to career choice. It would be rare to find one working a 9-5 job per se, unless it was to make ends meet between gigs. I really feel I might have something unique to offer you, which will still allow you the time to pursue your main interests.
