MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Martin Luther King Jr was born on June 15th, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps of becoming a Baptist Preacher with histories of civil rights activity. Whilst at school, he was an outstanding student and an academic theologian. In junior year, because of his high scores on his college entrance examinations, he skipped both the 9th and 12th grade. He then enrolled to Crozer Theological Seminary, while studying at University of Pennsylvania and being president of the senior class. After studying at the university, he received his bachelor of divinity degree. He also received the J. Lewis Crozer fellowship for graduate study at a university of his choice. He began Doctoral studies in Systematic Theology and was awarded honorary degrees from different colleges and university in several foreign countries. As a boy he experienced the racial discrimination of the time. At some point he was ordered to give up his seat to white passengers during a long bus ride. When he didn’t move right away, the driver would start yelling and calling him ‘black son of a bitch’. While growing older he realised how the racial discrimination had become worse throughout the years. In 1955, an African-American woman was arrested for refusing to give her bus seat to a white passenger. That’s when black activists were formed and chose King as their leader. The Montgomery buses desegregated after the U.S. Supreme Court declared segregation laws unconstitutional. On 28th August, 1963, King joined with other civil right leaders to present his famous ‘I have a dream’ speech. More than 250,000 people gathered to listen to demands on equal justice for all citizens. The speech was important, it wasn’t all lies, it was the truth thatgot people listening. The audience were stunned by this speech. Not only did black people go to the ‘march on Washington, white people who respected the blacks also went. His speech was mainly indicating that the blacks are the same as the whites, everybody is equal, if they don’t become brothers and sisters, who knows how much worser they could get. He has shown that struggle can be waged without violence. He sent messages to all races that blacks are people aswell not animals to play around with. His words had affected millions of people. He is the one who saved the world from tearing into pieces. His speech won the nobel peace prize in 1964 and was the youngest person to have received this award. Although he was arrested 30 times for his participation in civil right activities, he still never gave up his faith. Unfortunetely on 4th April, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot dead while standing on the balcony of a motel. James Earl Ray pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. The day before his death, he had given a speech and noted;’im happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man.’ Even though King suffered in his life, he died knowing he changed the world, he died knowing he had a family, a wife and four children, he died knowing his children would be brought up in a safer country. What more could he wish for?
