Certificate of completion for six sigma green belt training?

My friend has a certificate of completion for six sigma green belt training. During his training, he did a quality improvement project. Based on the given certificate, can anybody please confirm if my friend could be considered as 'Certified Green Belt'? Will the same certificate help him in his employment/career? Thank you in advance for all informations.

  1. Maybe. I worked for a company that had its own 6 sigma program, and would only accept certification from its own trainers. Smaller companies may accept external certification. If the certificate is from an acceptable source, it may be accepted by a potential employer. Apply for jobs and list that you have the certification. Let the employer decide whether to accept it or not.
  2. As for employment - it all depends on how much the organization is using or understands the Six Sigma Methodologies. If the organization your friend is looking to get hire at is actually using this stuff - then unfortunately your friend will probably not have much luck! There is a big difference in completing a course (even with a project involved) and truly being certified that you are capable of doing something. Six Sigma is no different in that there is a lot to be learned (I have been doing Six Sigma for over 20 years and am still learning new things). The best known / recognized Six Sigma Certification today is from the American Society for Quality. Many Six Sigma training programs are not geared to covering all of the materials or give enough practice exercise to allow an individual a full background in the topic to be able to pass the ASQ exams. So I would suggest that your friend look over the ASQ materials to see how well that he/she thinks they could do on an actual test of knowledge. They should probably work toward taking and passing the ASQ exam. Once your friend has done that, many hiring companies will definitely look them at more favorably.
