When during a doctoral program does the student start earning an income, however modest, in his or her field?

If possible, could you give me an estimate of how much income and in which field of study. Thanks.

  1. Academic doctoral programs from regarded institutions are normally tuition free and provide for a stipend in return for research/teaching to be done by the student during the semester. The stipend will not be a lot of money, so you still will have to take out student loans but significantly less than had you not been receiving anything. Additionally, once you receive a master's degree as an intermediary award, you are also eligible to be a paid lecturer, which again isn't a whole lot (usually about 3-4k per class), but helps reduce your need to take out sizeable loans. In all, you should have minimal debt by the time you receive your Ph.D.
