Is there any nation other than the USA which tolerates semi-literates attending college to play sports?

At the Division I level and at community colleges, they routinely get "student" athletes who are at the bottom of the barrel in academics. They have no study skills and no motivation. They don't belong in a school. Some belong in a prison. Do any of our global economic competitor nations put up with this?

  1. No, because nowhere else, as far as I know, the academic system put that much emphasis on sports (btw a very lucrative business). For example, in Europe, athletes (any kind, from track to soccer-football) are usually developed throuth private sports clubs not through schools.
