Can an officer apply for training in special forces in the US army?

I am going to be a college graduate and am looking to join the military. I am considering two options, one being entering OCS school and the other pursuing a ranger contract with the Army in hopes of training to be an army ranger. Nevertheless, despite the difficulty, I would like to try and enter special forces. My question is can an OCS school graduate then pursue a pathway to becoming a ranger? Is this even logical, ie. should I just pursue a ranger career from the get go? Thanks in advance.

  1. slots for officers in regiment are so competitive that you really dont have any chance. your best bet is to go enlisted first, get into regiment, then go green to gold. edit: think of it this way: what officer going into the infantry field DOES NOT want to be in regiment? ALL OF THEM DO. and a lot of htem have a huge leg up on you from being enlisted first. ROP (ranger orientation process) slots are EXTREMELY competitive. btw SF and ranger are 2 seperate things. for SF you need to be o-2P to even go through the selection process. and contrary to a few posts down who doesnt know how the army works (the one that said: she really doesnt know): regiment (along with all units in the army) has X number of total slots. they dont increase it just because there are more soldiers coming in. there are more than enough officers trying to get into regiment where they will never have an officer deficiet.
  2. once you become a commisioned officer you can do what ever you want i.e ranger school special forces all it takes is you to fill out a packet. ask your recruiter for more info
  3. You have to apply and be accepted. It is more difficult to get into the Special Forces. If you are graduating from college I don't understand why you have to go to OCS if you made the grades and have something the Army needs. Most Point grads are engineers!
  4. Yes You Can Go Into The Rangers (If You Can Pass The Selection Process) As An Officer... If I Were You I Would Get That In Writing Prior To Signing Anything... Recruiters Have A Way Of Sliding Stuff To The Side... GET IT IN WRITING. HOOOOAH
  5. on the contrary, to the first answer, the officer position needs to be filled. With the overwhelming of enlisted soldiers due to economy crisis, the officer position has many slots open. I say go for it. Esp special forces or rangers. Im not too sure how to answer your question though, because i dont really know. Talk to an officer recruiter
  6. I am not sure how to answer your question. But I would try for Coast Guard or Navy. I wouldn't do Army or Marines, way to dangerous. But if that is where you would like to be then here is the website. I would call this number and ask them what they think. But be careful because Recruiters are notorious for lying to get people in. 1-888-550-ARMY Good luck! Hope they can help you.
  7. ahhh..... ok here we go ...... you can get ranger school in you contract when you join, meaning they will send you to ranger school upon completion of OCS, that being said if you join and go into an officer branch that does not need rangers (support) they will not allow this. as an officer you have to wait until your year group is eligible to go to SFAS (special forces assessment and Selection). Your year group will be when you are a senior 1st Lt or Captain. Once you pass Selection they will send you to the SF Qualification Course. Basically you have to wait a year or two once you get commissioned to join SF. Your best bet is to join go to OCS get commissioned as a infantry officer, go to ranger school, learn allot as a butter bar. then go to SFAS when your time is available and rock on!
  8. yes. however, you must first be branch qualified. I suggest you go ahead and finish strong in OCS, attend your officer basic course for your choosen branch, while there request a Ranger school slot. After you graduate from "John Wayne High" you can request an SF branch transfer. By the time, you finish all this training and get a chance to apply, you will or should be a 1st LT or perhaps a CPT. Not an easy or fast track to choose, but it can be quite rewarding. Good luck.
  9. yes i,ve seen officers go through the training but your best best is to go through the Academy at west point first not ocs then opt for Special forces training
  10. Don't listen to anyone but: Leif and E.D. on this one. There is alot of crap getting pushed in these answers.
  11. yes it is possible good luck hope to see you at ft.bragg sua sponte rangers lead the way
