Can I deduct career training for my job?

I had to go to a few classes over the past 3 years and my job did not pay for them. Can I deduct or clam them on my taxes? Can I have the past 2 years redone if I was able to deduct them.

  1. Maybe. See irs pub 970. If the classes did not train you for a new job, they can be deducted on schedule A. However, the first 2% of your AGI is deducted and if you don't already itemize, it may not change anything.
  2. if you don't itemize it won't matter if you take classes to improve your skills, or it is r'qd by your employment they could be deductible, in the year you pay for them and yes, the are material enough to make a difference you can amend your 2007 and 2008 returns
