- You can sometimes get the master's on the way to the Ph.D., but it may be optional. How long it takes to get through graduate school often depends on how long it takes you to finish your thesis research, then write and defend your dissertation. So it is hard to say which school would have the shortest program. You'd have to look at each school and see how long it would take to complete just the required coursework, then realize that some students will finish their thesis in a year and some will take much longer.
- If you are looking at a program that offers a master degree en-route to a PhD the time depends on your thesis. Arguably you should be able to complete and successfully defend you thesis before the start of your third year. This would mean that you PhD coursework would take an additional 2 years to complete full-time with an additional 1 - 2 years to prepare your dissertation. Total time should be 5 - 6 years full-time assuming you meet your milestones.
