If you sign an athletic scholarship at the end of the season can you get cut by the coach after two games?

Someone gets an athletic scholarship from an NCAA division 1 team after not being on scholarship for the year before. The coach has you sign a scholarship in the spring for next fall. The season begins in the Fall, early August and after having participated in two pre-season games can that person be cut from the team? Is the scholarship binding for that year as far as being on the team and receiving the aid? What would be the point of cutting someone that is on scholarship if it was not for behavioral or academic problems? help?
