what was the first doctoral degree, where was it first awarded?
I heard this was actually a Law Degree in Cologne but I cannot find any sources. If this is correct, please provide a source, if not, please provide a source for the correct information. Thank You!

- Doctorates were first given in the middle ages and meant that the recipient was qualified to teach in that field. The meaning was different than it is now. Originally the church issued the degree, but that changed in 1213. The University of Paris was the first school allowed to award doctorates, so it was not in Cologne.
