do masters and phd degrees have to come from the same college?
the grad school i'm planning to go to says that they dont accept terminal masters degrees (like you have to go on to get your phd or they take away your masters), but does that mean i have to get my phd from that school as well? or can i go somewhere else for my phd?

- Absolutely not. It is rare you would get both from the same school. My daughter specifically made sure she went to different schools.
- Certain schools/areas are starting to only offer PhD-track Masters degrees, so if you attend a university that follows this system, then you will need to follow through and get your PhD. There is usually no distinction between the two levels, you simply study for however long it takes you to earn a PhD. However, if you already have a Masters, most schools will accept you as a PhD student. In terms of employment, it can actually be an asset to have degrees from different schools, since your perspective will be wider and you're more likely to be trained in different schools of thought, and have worked alongside twice as many fellow grad students.
