I want to be a doctor, however I slacked off in high school, do I still have a chance? I'm 18.?

I slacked off throughout high school. I've been on both sides of the fence, I was bullied freshman / sophomore year so I dropped out and attended an online high school. My junior and senior year, I did very stupid things to fit in. I started becoming involved with the "popular" crowd who drank and did drugs, which ultimately led me being the one who did the drugs and drank. I feel horrible for letting myself go down that road, but it happened, I can't change it. I fortunately did get accepted into a four year college, but I don't have the rigorous curriculum background that most students in pursuit of a doctoral degree do. I'm horrible at math, but I'm willing to work. I've finally discovered what I want to do with my life. What can I do to reach my goals, besides the obvious hard work.

  1. It's over for you, sorry. I'll give you a nice tip as you wait my table...
  2. Tutorials if you still don't understand something? And then the only other thing I can think of is try to study with someone who understands it
  3. If you were ever convicted of a crime, you won't get a job as a doctor, so it's not worth trying. If you weren't, you still have a shot, but a very long way to go. A medical doctor has an MD (medical degree), not a PhD (doctorate). You'll need to build your math up to calculus, then take the premed classes. And you'll need a very high college GPA.
  4. YES!!! you can def.become a doctor!! dont let anything put you down!! in the beginning of my high school year i did the same thing as you but towards the end I did great! in college try to get a good GPA higher than 3.5 and take all pre-med classes like bi.chem biology organic chemistry, general chemistry physics, etc. IT WILL BE HARD! but you have to try HARD! the ending will be worth it! and when you write your personal statement to that college you will have an interesting story to tell! high school doesnt matter anymore trust me i know becus I am in college and all that matters now is what YOU DO IN COLLEGE! gain experience with a doctor! volunteer at hospitals or with old people (lol) gain ALOTT of experience to show interest! TRY HARD HARD HARD! and you will get in! the past is past and high school doesnt matter anymore and what college youre going to doesnt matter either. my bf is in the same boat as you, he wants to be a lawyer and hes going to a not-so-great 4 year univ.but AT LEAST HES GOING TO A 4 YEAR!! most people dont! so now hes trying hard so he can get into law school! GOOD LUCK! i know you can do it =))
  5. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance....just get tutors in the subjects you have trouble with....I would think you only have to get B's...but you will have to ask.????..Or just take PASS/NOPASS in some courses that you are allowed to do that in. Good luck; pursue your dreams not others...But you know how tough it can be....long hours...and as long as you are ready to deal with that...why not???
