Marijuana in Pregnancy? Question Deleted..?

Somebody just deleted a question after a ton of people jumped on it to judge and get angry when they clearly have no idea what theyre talking about. To all of you unedcated people who had no reason to be even answering the question since its clear youve done ZERO research you should really start looking for info before giving your 2 cents to others. To the lady who deleted her question, read this and show to your bf is nesseccary and ask him to proove his point because he cant. There has NEVER been conclusive study to show harm to fetus. Dr. Melanie Dreher is one of a handful of scientists who have researched marijuana objectively and intelligently in the last three decades. Dr Dreher is Dean of the University of Iowa’s College of Nursing, and also holds the post of Associate Director for the University’s Department of Nursing and Patient Services. She’s a perpetual overachiever who earned honors degrees in nursing, anthropology and philosophy before being awarded a PhD in anthropology from prestigious Columbia University in 1977. Although Dreher is a multi-faceted researcher and teacher whose expertise ranges from culture to child development to public health, she began early on to specialize in medical anthropology. After distinguishing herself as a field researcher in graduate school, Dreher was hand-picked by her professors to conduct a major study of marijuana use in Jamaica. Her doctoral dissertation was published as a book titled “Working Men and Ganja,” which stands as one of the premier cross-cultural studies of chronic marijuana use. Along with being a widely-published researcher, writer, and college administrator, Dreher is a professor or lecturer at several institutions, including the University of the West Indies. She recently served as president of the 120,000 member Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honour Society, has been an expert witness in a religious freedom case involving ganja use by the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church, and is one of the most well-respected academicians in the world. Melanie Dreher, RN, PhD, FAAN explains her cannabis and pregnancy research study in Jamaica. Pregnant women and their children were studied for over ten plus years, both marijuana smokers and non-smokers were included in the study – one of the first scientific studies of the effects that cannabis may have on pregnancy and the child’s development thereafter. Prenatal Marijuana Exposure and Neonatal Outcomes in Jamaica: An Ethnographic Study “Although no positive or negative neurobehavioral effects of prenatal exposure were found at 3 days of life using the Brazelton examination, there were significant differences between the exposed and non-exposed neonates at the end of the first month. Comparing the two groups, the neonates of mothers who used marijuana showed better physiological stability at 1 month and required less examiner facilitation to reach an organized state and become available for social stimulation. And while I seriously doubt that it causes schiophrenia your entire answer is irrelevant since were talking about marijuana use in pregnancy and how that affects baby not how it affects a teen user.

  1. Yep! Glad to see at least ONE person read the link that I provided! http://www.druglibrary.org/SCHAFFER/hemp/medical/can-babies.htm
  2. I smoked marijuana for 5 years very heavily. Then I quit on April 20th (one last smoke out) so I could pass a piss test for a job. On April 29th I conceived my first child after trying for 4 years (I'm young with no major fertility issues, I just couldn't conceive!) So although I know that study, and I'm not ignorant about the effects of marijuana during prenatal time and that it is often better and even prescribed for morning sickness by some doctors here in California, I am convinced that it affected my fertility........ cuz what are the odds of getting pregnant right after I stop smoking after 4 years of trying and nothing??? hmm think about that :)
  3. great so at 1 month the babies are not negatively affected, have you looked into the link between marijuana and schizophrenia? or did you base this upon the research of one person rather than all studies about the subject? Use of street drugs (including LSD,methamphetamine,marijuana/hash/cannabis) and alcohol have been linked with significantly increased probability of developing psychosis and schizophrenia. This link has been documented in over 30 different scientific studies (studies done mostly in the UK, Australia and Sweden) over the past 20 years. In one example, a study interviewed 50,000 members of the Swedish Army about their drug consumption and followed up with them later in life. Those who were heavy consumers of cannabis at age 18 were over 600% more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia over the next 15 years than those did not take it. (see diagram below). Experts estimate that between 8% and 13% of all schizophrenia cases are linked to marijuana / cannabis use during teen years. http://www.schizophrenia.com/prevention/streetdrugs.html ETA: if you check out the link given it shows that the younger you are exposed to marijuana the more likely you are to develop schizophrenia, the more the brain is developing the higher the chance, think how much an unborn baby's brain is developing, how many studies have looked at these kids when they are adults? rather than just as babies, has anyone checked to see how unborn babies exposed to marijuana have developed over time, how many of them have psychiatric problems? oh and btw over 20 independent studies have shown that people who regularly use marijuana are much more likely to develop schizophrenia, that's 20 which is 19 more than your 1 study that claims to have no negative effects, maybe do some more research before spouting your views if you want to seem credible.
  4. My sister smoked pot while she was pregnant with her children and though they had no problems at birth or the first few years of life I do believe it contributed to ADHD later in life for them. Only reason I believe so is because she smoked with two of her children and didn't with third and the first two are the ones with the developmental delays once school aged. Could be a mere coincidence but we'll never know. Im pro-choice as far as smoking pot, to each is there own. I see no harm in it, but I do honestly believe it did cause some problems for her older ones. I've noticed the same thing with a few other people I know that smoked during pregnancy. Could be coincidence, could be fact. I would be curious to see further study on this subject though.
